This old tower was elegantly restored by its Italian architect owner with loving attention to authentic details. His own house is just across the courtyard from the tower, which faces onto the pool. Vittorio and his wife are retired now. You'll find them entirely discreet if you wish to be alone and wonderfully helpful should you want to tap their in-depth local knowledge! Torre di Sotto is a truly splendid Umbrian holiday choice, bursting with real character. You'll find gracious views, a bathroom with touches of gold in the style of Klimt. The fabulous swimming pool has speakers hidden in the fantastical polished sandstone ledges rising above the pool - bring your own CDs or borrow from Vittorio's huge jazz collection to enjoy music while you swim. And there's a separate hydromassage pool just to ensure you are thoroughly spoiled. Torre di Sotto is a Summer’s Leases holiday choice for those intent on some serious spoiling!
The house sits below Montone, a medieval hill town steeped in serene charm. The little town is officially designated one of Italy's "Most Beautiful Borgos" - and we think you'll fall in love with it! You’ll find a choice of restaurants, a couple of bars in the main square and one of those fascinating little sell-everything shops that have long since disappeared from Britain - and it's all just a 5 minute drive away (we don't offer isolated houses half way up mountain tracks!). The E45 superstrada, for easy access to the whole of Umbria and Tuscany is only a swift 3 miles from your door. For a large supermarket, a great Wednesday morning market, banks, bars and half a dozen restaurants, Umbertide is 4 miles to the south. Umbertide's market is a real treat, offering local produce like farmer's sausages, salami and fabulous veges as well as local shepherd's cheeses and a host of household bargains and inexpensive clothes and shoes.
Good Grey Gubbio, another beautiful medieval hill town, is half an hours' drive away. The funicular there will whisk you up above the merry jumble of Gubbio’s antique roofscape if you go to visit Saint Ubaldo, giving you an unrivalled view of the town and the wide valley it dominates. Gubbio also offers handsome pottery, all manner of medieval weaponry and wonderful plaster decorations that would tempt even a saint to overspend! Perugia is Umbria's capital city and only 40 minutes drive away - a must for art lovers and Etruscan enthusiasts. Lake Trasimeno (Italy's 4th largest lake), Assisi and its beautiful basilica in honour of Saint Francis, and the wonderful wines of Torgiano and Montepulciano are all within easy reach - if you can manage to drag yourselves away from that splendid swimming pool...? Pottery officianados will not be able to resist the highly decorated table ware and the richly swathed terra cotta pots at Deruta - and then on to the "Umbra" restaurant at charming Todi for lunch? The views from their terrace are to die for! You are also handily placed for exploring into Tuscany from Torre di Sotto. Stunning little Cortona and lovely San Sepolcro are both well within an hour's scenic drive. If you prefer to stick closer to home, why not explore the surrounding hills on horseback, with a guide from the nearby stables? Or simply go walking along the many lanes winding through the vineyards and ancient olive groves of this peacefully rustic area.
The main part of Torre di Sotto is artfully fitted into an old tower. To the left, you’ll see the splendid loggia, which makes an open air sitting room, perfect for shady meals away from the blazing sun or for enjoying the cool of the evening. The gracious brick arches, traditional terracotta paving and dark oak beams give this ‘room’ an authentic Renaissance feel. The ground floor of the tower contains a well-equipped kitchen with dining table. The cupboards are amply filled with crockery and saucepans, there's a fridge-freezer, smart electric oven with gas hob and a top-loading washing machine will ensure you are well catered for. A circular wooden staircase leads up to the bathroom and a landing with two bunk beds, then carries on up to an airy double bedroom (with air con) at the top. To the right of the tower is the separate annex with a twin bedroom and its own elegantly tiled en suite bathroom, with possibly the largest shower ever!
Wash away your worldy cares at delightful Torre di Sotto. Soak up the stunning scenery, graze on authentic local dishes and return to the fray refeshed by a truly memorable holiday in sainted Umbria.David & Julia Jones, Wales, 2016Beautiful location.
Great pool - size, depth & cleanliness.
Well equipped kitchen.
Plenty of storage space in bedrooms.
Not as close to Montone as we had interpreted from description- it's just over 2 miles (once you know short cuts) up the hill - we walked it many times & walk regularly so no problem , but not what we expected.
Vittorio is (as described!) a lovely fellow & his wife is charming too. Discreet but always around when needed.
Great fortnight - highly recommended.John Sullivan, Shropshire, 2015Everything you could wish for in Umbria!
The accommodation was first rate. The buildings are typically Italian and has lots of history. The outside dining area is perfect in this climate and has a wonderful bar-b-que easily accessible from it. The kitchen is well stocked with crockery, glassware, pots & pans. Ample storage and a good sized fridge freezer. Both bedrooms were ample size and bedding was beautiffully laundered. The bedroom in the tower has air conditioning, the ground floor room has a fan which was ample even at 35°. The bathrooms are luxurious and stocked with towels.
Outside is the cherry on the cake! What fantastic surroundings, a swimming pool to die for complete with diving board and yes a separate Jacuzzi. The views are beautiful and the neighbouring village that you cant miss is spectacular to say the least. It is beautifully cared for and has some stunning restaurants to name but two, La Locanda Del Capitano & Erba Luna, well worth a visit. It has coffee bars a small store for basic provisions, museum and spectacular views?
Vittorio the owner who lives on site with his wife is the perfect host a lovely man who is extremely interesting. He very much leaves you to your own devices but always on hand to answer any questions you may have?
Torre di Sotto is highly recommended for both location for touring being 35 Km from Asissi and 8Km from Umbertide which has all the amenities of a large townClaessen, LondonThe villa and pool provide an excellent base for a mix of poolside relaxation and fun, and the ability to enjoy the best of Umbria. Montone is simply one of the most wonderful medieval villages with stunning views and a selection of restaurants.
The villa is rustic but well maintained, the pool and surroundings are magnificent, and the hospitality and care of Vittorio is second to none. With the pool to yourselves - you enjoy privacy and views, but a helping hand is only a short step away.Moira Morrissey, Norfolk (5 star client)It’s our fifth visit to Torre di Sotto, so that probably says it all!!
We love it there. Our son Sam spent a lot of time in the pool and drawing pictures of the view of Montone (he’s 5). We ate, drank and relaxed. Vittorio and Enrica are wonderful hosts, as always.Linda Gifford, Solihull. We had a fantastic time at Torre di Sotto - the pool is out of this world and the loggia is just perfect for dining, relaxing or just getting out of the sun for a quiet read! Vittorio and Enrica are perfect hosts - available whenever you wish with a wealth of local knowledge but discreetly absent otherwise.Raylene Prout, CA.Torre di Sotto was actually more grand than I expected. The photographs do not do it justice. The property is kept in pristine order by Vittorio, a true gentleman. There are touches of grandeur everywhere and the vistas in every direction are breathtaking. Finally - Montone is enchanting. We went most days to Cafe Erbaluna (in the main piazza) to take our cappuccinos and croissant in the morning, or just to hang out and watch the townfolk.Peter Webster, Colchester. The house and gardens were beautiful. They exceeded our expectations in every way. Vittorio was very helpful and kind and we found the region lovely.
Helen Moffatt, Haywards Heath. We found the house perfect for us as the layout of the accommodation suited our needs. It was lovely to have a bit of privacy with the girls enjoying in particular their gorgeous shower.
We loved the pool and enjoyed the stereo system. Vittorio was a model host, never intrusive but always available for help. There was plenty of space around the pool which was nice. The views were outstanding and it was fantastically quiet. Lovely to watch the changing light on the town of Montone.Jane Meldrum, Oberwil.Torre di Sotto is a fabulous place to unwind and chill out. It is a truly beautiful house in a fantastic location and the owners are a delight. My husband was even inspired to draw again after nearly 20 years! It was perfectly situated for day trips although we did spend most of our time relaxing by the pool. What can I say about the sound system, what a brilliant idea and I felt that is what made the holiday so perfect because Vittorio & Enrica have thought of everything.
Alison Cattermole, Surrey. It was all wonderful. Lying by the pool and looking up at the silhouette of Montone against the skyline was a delight.
Richard Storey, York.We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in a beautiful part of Umbria. Our hosts were very polite, helpful and informative without being intrusive.
