Description
Montepulciano
is a hilltop town with an eye for theatricality. You simply can’t
help but love the atmosphere! It’s one of Tuscany’s more
important wine towns and as such is always bursting with life. You’ll
find Renaissance art, well-stocked cantinas, shops and eateries aplenty
and it’s just 10 km from the Umbrian border. Culture buffs are
spoilt for choice with all the great art on offer and all the best
towns within easy reach, as a glance at any map will show. Scenic
Siena is an hour’s drive away and picturesque Pienza just 20
minutes; this humble little village was transformed by Pope Pius II
in 1460 to become one of the earliest Renaissance masterpieces.
For
the wine buff, there’s the local Vino Nobile to sample in cool
vaulted wineries. Slightly further afield, pilgrimages to the vineyards
of Montalcino and Chianti will be the stuff of many a happy morning’s
wine tasting.
La
Cascina is the new addition to the Podere Fontecastello estate: a separate building, previously a barn, with private
terrace, a large open-plan sitting room with kitchen and dining table,
double bedroom and bathroom with shower. The sitting room and kitchen have been delightfully decorated with rustic knick-knacks - and the welcome you’ll
receive is delightful too!
The whole area, and the house in particular were perfect for us. It is in a quiet town, with breathtaking views and beautiful walks up to the old town, and amongst all the narrow streets... La Cascina was a fantastic house, situated in a the most idyllic place, with the birds singing in the mornings, sun shining through the window and views to the vineyards and olive groves. It was kept spotless and was also homely. Antonella and her family are so welcoming and friendly, but also allow you privacy. The homemade wine and olive oil would make you want to stay there forever. I couldn’t recommend this property more highly!! Alison Mackey, County Wicklow. The accommodation was just as the (on-line) brochure described. The information pack was helpful as were our hosts. Antonella and her mother both looked after us very well and S. Santi just smiled and chattered away to us in Italian, even though we understood a tiny fraction of what he said! The ‘welcome’ bottle of wine and olive oil were both much appreciated and enjoyable as were the freshly laid eggs which Marina insisted we have. We really enjoyed the shade of the vines below the terrace for afternoon reading / snoozing. The terrace was great and we entertained some neighbours for drinks, and had breakfast there every morning. On the last morning Antonella insisted on washing our hire car when she saw me washing dust off the windows. What a woman!! Overall we had a wonderful holiday, Montepulciano is a delightful place, lots of lovely restaurants, stunning views and narrow streets to wander about. The hills certainly keep you fit! We would be very happy to return for another visit. Peter & Chic Cook, Oxford. We found the property really handy for the town of Montepulciano and also for visiting the places we had chosen. The large terrace was ideal for sunbathing or relaxing after a day out and the garden was ideal due to the number of trees which provided much-needed shade in the soaring temperatures. Antonella and the family were most generous and the little gifts which appeared regularly were an added enjoyment. She was a mine of information about the surrounding area and eating places. Without being asked Signora Martina replaced a somewhat small parasol and table with new ones and also provided a change of linen midweek, which was not expected. The family never intruded and although they worked from early morning we were never awoken early by noise of voices or machinery. All in all a very good holiday. Janice Bell, Troon. We got on very well. The hosts were extremely welcoming and friendly - not quite family, but certainly approaching so. The little homemade gifts were a special treat. The unit was marvelous: roomy, bright, spotlessly clean, and all the amenities we would find in our own house. We appreciated the little decadence of sitting on our (private) patio in the late afternoons, sipping wine with cheese and crackers, plucking grapes from the vines growing up to our level. We depended on local transportation for our visit, and did not suffer for doing so - 10 minute walk, with bags (we travel light, true) from the bus terminal to La Cascina, 25 minute walk to Montepulciano main square, easy access to neighbouring towns/villages via bus. Charles and Anne Hunt, Victoria. We loved the barn, the location and basically everything about it. It was an ideal spot for us with our one year old who loved playing with the cats, dog and looking at the hens and geese. It was spotless and well resourced in terms of towels, linen, kitchen equipment. Diana Mitchell, Dublin. |
