This
old tower was elegantly restored by its Italian architect owner.
His own house is just across the courtyard from the tower, which
faces onto the pool. Torre di Sotto is splendid: gracious views,
a bathroom with touches of gold in the style of Klimt, and not merely
a swimming pool with speakers (bring your own CDs!) hidden in the
fantastical polished sandstone ledges rising above the pool, but
a hydromassage pool too. A Summer’s Leases holiday home with éclat.
The
house sits below Montone, a medieval citadel, steeped in serene charm.
You’ll find three excellent restaurants, a couple of bars in
the main square and the kind of small shops that have long since disappeared
from Britain tucked about the place - and they’re only 5 minutes’
drive away. The
E45 superstrada, for swift access to the whole of Umbria and Tuscany is just 5 km from your door. For the weekly shop, the Wednesday market, banks etc,
Umbertide, 8 km to the south, will supply your every need. For an interesting day out, Good Grey Gubbio is an easy drive. The fun funicular will whisk you up above the merry jumble of Gubbio’s antique roofscape if you go to visit Saint Ubaldo, and give you an unrivalled view of the town and the wide valley it dominates. Gubbio also offers handsome pottery, all manner of medieval weaponry and wonderful plaster decorations that would tempt even a saint to overspend!
The main part of this charming house is neatly fitted into the tower.
To the left, you’ll see the splendid loggia, which
makes an open air sitting room, perfect for shady meals away from
the blazing sun or enjoying the cool of the evening. The gracious
brick arches, traditional terracotta paving and dark oak
beams give this ‘room’ an authentically Renaissance
feel. The ground floor of the tower contains a well-equipped kitchen
with dining table. Cupboards amply filled with crockery and saucepans,
a fridge-freezer, smart electric oven with gas hob and a top-loading
washing machine will ensure you are well catered for. A circular
wooden staircase leads up to the bathroom and a landing with two
bunk beds, then carries on to an airy double bedroom at the top.
To the right of the tower
is the annex with a twin bedroom and its own elegantly tiled en
suite bathroom
- with possibly the largest shower ever! Altogether Torre di
Sotto is a superb holiday choice.
It’s our fifth visit to Torre di Sotto, so that probably says it all!! We love it there. Our son Sam spent a lot of time in the pool and drawing pictures of the view of Montone (he’s 5). We ate, drank and relaxed. Vittorio and Enrica are wonderful hosts, as always. Moira Morrissey, Norfolk. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in a beautiful part of Umbria. Our hosts were very polite, helpful and informative without being intrusive. The accommodation was spotless with all available kitchen facilities which was helpful as we cooked a couple of times on an evening during our stay. Will definitely return! Richard Storey, York. It was all wonderful. Lying by the pool and looking up at the silhouette of Montone against the skyline was a delight. Alison Cattermole, Surrey. The house and gardens were beautiful. They exceeded our expectations in every way. Vittorio was very helpful and kind and we found the region lovely. Peter Webster, Colchester. Torre di Sotto is a fabulous place to unwind and chill out. It is a truly beautiful house in a fantastic location and the owners are a delight. My husband was even inspired to draw again after nearly 20 years! It was perfectly situated for day trips although we did spend most of our time relaxing by the pool. What can I say about the sound system, what a brilliant idea and I felt that is what made the holiday so perfect because Vittorio & Enrica have thought of everything. Jane Meldrum, Oberwil. Torre di Sotto was actually more grand than I expected. The photographs do not do it justice. The property is kept in pristine order by Vittorio, a true gentleman. There are touches of grandeur everywhere, from the gorgeous marble shower in the annex to the handmade bed linens (made by Enrica from fabric that they brought back from one of their many travels). The vistas in every direction are breathtaking. Finally - Montone is enchanting. We went most days to Cafe Erbaluna (in the main piazza) to take our cappuccinos and croissant in the morning, or just to hang out and watch the townfolk. Raylene Prout, CA. We found the house perfect for us as the layout of the accommodation suited our needs. It was lovely to have a bit of privacy with the girls enjoying in particular their gorgeous shower. We loved the pool and enjoyed the stereo system. Vittorio was a model host, never intrusive but always available for help. There was plenty of space around the pool which was nice. The views were outstanding and it was fantastically quiet. Lovely to watch the changing light on the town of Montone. Helen Moffatt, Haywards Heath. The whole place was very clean, neat and tidy and obviously well looked after. We loved the Loggia and the comfy chairs where we spent a good deal of time. It was so pleasant at the villa, that we did’nt feel the need to go out. In fact we only ate out two evenings (at Il Capitano - wonderful and Erbaluna - brilliant) and lunchtime somewhere on Lake Trasimeno (disappointing). The Hydrotherapy pool was brilliant for me to sit in, as I don’t swim - I’m usually just a foot dangler! whilst the others enjoyed the “proper” pool. The shower in the annex was wonderful and, if it would have gone in the suitcase, I would have brought it home! Ian Davis, Marlborough. |
