A charming spot in Umbria’s lush countryside for a couple or a young family

Il Poggio is another pleasing proposition with
that special Summer’s Leases plus! It’s the ideal choice
for a couple or a young family in search of a spoiling spot. There’s
home cooking on offer and babysitting too if required. It’s
great for basking quietly in the Umbrian sunshine or
relaxing in the Jacuzzi. It’s also well placed for sightseeing;
you’re
barely 15 minutes from the little boats and beaches of picturesque Lake
Trasimeno and 30
from the great art of ancient Perugia,
the colourful pottery of Deruta and the world class wines made by
the Lungarotti family at Torgiano - and that’s to name but
a few of the sights to see and the things to do nearby.
Il
Poggio lies 1½ km below the thriving hilltop village of Agello,
which offers glorious views across the Caina valley from the tumbled
ruins of its castle, and is owned by the young couple who
live next door. You’ll
find them - and their friendly dogs - warmly welcoming. About one
third of the entire farmhouse has been used to create Il Poggio,
a beautifully finished, totally private, first floor apartment.
There’s
shaded parking in the barn (you can see its sloping roof in our first
photo) beside Il Poggio’s front door. Your private garden
at the back of the apartment has seriously pretty views; your lawn
ends at the beginning of a grove of wonderfully gnarled old olive
trees, beyond which are layered picturesque hills. It’s
a fine spot for kids and grown-ups alike.
The
front door opens onto a flight of terracotta stairs, which
lead up to the main room with fine oak beams and traditional tiled
floor. At one end, there’s a comfortable sitting room. At
the other, a little oak dining table and a beautifully
planned and equipped kitchen. Everything is just right: it’s
light, bright and delightfully appealing. The kitchen has modern
kitchen units, a gas cooker, a small fridge with freezer and a dishwasher.
There’s a pretty double bedroom and a comfortable
bedroom with twin beds. The whole house is attractively “country
style”, as Stephie engagingly puts it and our photos confirm.
Sergio
and Stephie will be delighted to sell you their excellent, home-produced
olive oil from the olive grove at the bottom of your garden. You can also book a special supper on the weekday
of your choice: a feast of authentic Umbrian home-cooked dishes under the stars with no worries about driving home.
Il Poggio has been a Summer’s Leases favourite for years,
and with the new Jacuzzi, it’s got even better. Go
on, pamper yourselves!!
The house is excellent on many counts... The welcome from Sergio and his Mamma was warm and remained so throughout our stay. Nothing was too much trouble and any request was met at once, eg a shower attachment to the hose to cool us down in some of the hottest weather they had experienced in their area was provided and was most welcome!! [Webmaster’s comment: this was before the Jacuzzi arrived!] Mamma was a source of goodies from the garden and from her larder - we shared in the tomato sugo bottling day and enjoyed the outcome. The Umbrian meal was a great experience, shared with our friends. Mamma cooked for five and we ate the leftovers next day!!! The location is excellent for sightseeing throughout the central area of Italy with good road and rail links to major cities and lesser known areas. We managed to see a good many hill towns and do some shopping in spite of the temperatures and always were pleased to return “home” to Il Poggio. The dogs were a bonus for us. We enjoyed their company and the fun of playing with them. The peace and the luxury of having a little house of one’s own for a few weeks was a great bonus to us. We felt that we were experiencing a real piece of Italian life, especially as the Festa was on in Agello and we were warmly welcomed by the villagers when we joined their al fresco dinners and concerts. We loved the ambience of Umbria and will return again. Margaret Stuart, Dumfries.
We loved Il Poggio! The apartment was wonderful as were the grounds and the hosts. It was very convenient for places we wanted to see and very relaxing too. The arrival packet was wonderful plus the kitchen was extremely well stocked. We cooked there every evening, except for Angela’s incredible dinner, and all we could need was at hand. We’re hoping to return. Lissa and Dan Hoeprich, Colorado. Our stay with Stephie, Sergio and Angela was magnificent in large part because of these three people and their wonderful dogs Milou, Benno, and Teddy. We had many great conversations and plenty of romps through the fields, as well as a 17th birthday party for our daughter in the garden with lasagna made by Stephie and Angela as a gift for Anika! We loved the location and the walk up the hill to Agello for food and supplies.... everyone was terribly nice even though our Italian is so limited. We also had the supreme Il Poggio dinner that we still exclaim over when telling friends of that amazing culinary experience. What a fabulous treat that was! Pam Tifft, Portland. We got on great in the house. The house was clean, well equipped, tastefully appointed, and ideally located. We were provided a “welcome” package upon our arrival consisting of a stocked frig, staples like bread and olive oil, and two bottles of wine - a real surprise and delight (also a godsend since grocery stores are closed on Sundays). The hosts (Stephanie, Sergio, and mama) were all very kind, available, and helpful. We also enjoyed the three dogs, who are in a way hosts as well, so much so that we wrote haikus about them in fond remembrance (to be sent to Stephanie later). We were also provided a home-cooked Umbrian meal one evening out on the back lawn overlooking the olive grove. This was done since the hosts were installing a new kitchen into their home and were concerned that we would be miffed about the noise of the workmen - sort of a compensation; however, we weren’t disturbed at all since we (or I rather) tend to be loggerheads when sleeping and did not find our vacation lessened by the project whatsoever. In any case, we accepted the dinner graciously, and had a wonderful time eating very slowly, course by course, with candlelight, hovering fire flies, and Maria Callas soulfully singing in the background. Idyllic to say the least. Much better than a restaurant. Stephie was also grand about providing maps and directions for us navigationally impaired individuals. All in all, a really splendid time at a perfect place. Highly highly recommended. Cheryl Nakata, Chicago. The apartment was the best we had stayed in, very clean with lots of personal touches like soap and dishwasher tablets. The welcome pack was a lovely touch and contained more than we expected. Sergio and Stephie and their dogs were very attentive and very friendly. The Umbrian supper cooked by Sergio’s mum was exceptionally good. We would recommend this apartment to anyone wanting a holiday in Umbria. Maggie Wisdom, Dorset. Lovely place, well maintained, clean and tidy; All necessary equipment, etc. was provided. Sergio and Stephie, and Mama, were all very helpful and caring. The “welcome pack” was excellent, and lasted us for days! Would definitely go to this accommodation again, and would recommend to friends. Dr B Patel, Middlesex. We loved our stay at Il Poggio. It was beautiful in every sense - the house, the grounds, the surrounding countryside. It was the perfect choice for a stay in Umbria. Close to all Umbrian towns. In fact, it was much prettier and more spacious than described. Of course, we can’t forget our hosts, Sergio (and his great mom) and Stephie. They were most welcoming, always helpful and generous. And what an Umbrian feast they cooked for us one night! The wild asparagus cannelloni was one of the tastiest dishes I have ever eaten! We hope to return again someday. Seth Josephson, Verona NJ. |
