This is a wonderful place to stay - comfortable, and right in the beautiful heart of vibrant Siena. But if you have difficulty coping with stairs, stop reading now because there are over 60 steps to cope with! However if stairs are not a problem, then you’ve just found the perfect place for a truly special Tuscan holiday!
This is an historic tower in Siena’s contrada of La Lupa (the she-wolf). The tower was built in the early 1200s, reaches up twenty metres and has walls six feet thick! Our apartment is on three floors at the top of this ancient tower and has what can only be described as truly stunning views across to the Chianti hills.
Siena’s Palio takes place every 2nd of July and every 16th of August - and naturally the Lupaioli (the residents of Contrada La Lupa), all go quite mad in their desire to beat their despised rivals “the porcupine” and win the famous horse race. The Lupaioli (pronounced loop-eye-oh-lee) have 34 wins to their credit. Their motto is “to Rome our mascot, but to Siena all the honours”. You’ll be very welcome to join their honoured ranks by becoming residents in the tower! But we won’t go on about Siena as there’s far too much to say. There are guide books bursting with information to ensure your visit is nothing short of glorious.
If you park by the sports stadium, you’ll be amazed at what a short walk it is to your front door. If you want to explore outside Siena, you can hop in your car and head for the hills. And what hills! The temptations of the Chianti area are endless: beautiful Italian gardens to visit, olive oil producers and castles with cellars full of luscious wines, and endless great art in nearby hill towns like San Gimignano, Monteriggioni and Montepulciano. Or let the train take the strain for a happy day’s sightseeing in Florence or Arezzo. Your choices are vast. In short, this tower has it all, including location, location and location.
The tower is not merely an historic gem in the centre of one of Tuscany’s most beautiful towns, it’s also a comfortable home for up to six people with its three very pleasant bedrooms and two bathrooms. The front door on the street leads you into a wide, communal entrance up 3 broad flights of time worn stone stairs. At the top you’ll find your own front door, opening into an elegant entrance with 3 short flights of modern stone stairs that take you directly into the formal sitting room. Here you’ll find handsome paintings, antique furniture and a grand piano in working condition (a Pleyei from Paris dated 1786). The huge, well-equipped kitchen is on this level as are the three bedrooms and two bathrooms (one with spa bath, one with a shower). Another short flight of stairs brings you to the top of the tower and the comfy family room with satellite TV and a door onto your long, narrow terrace.
If you are thinking of spoiling yourselves in lovely Siena, then we’d recommend Contrada La Lupa should go straight to the top of your list!!
We loved the property. It was very well equipped, and spacious. Its position in the centre of the city made it ideal for a car-free (and care-free) holiday. It was easily accessible from the station by bus. It was possible to buy all the provisions we needed very locally, and it was great that the kitchen was so well-equipped for cooking! Alessandro made us feel very welcome, and his wine was delicious. He gave us helpful advice with regard to suitable restaurants etc. We really enjoyed being surrounded by all the pageantry of the contrada, and we really appreciated our birds’ eye view of the Fonte Nuova and the La Lupa headquarters. We never felt the need to stray from Siena for the entire week. There was so much to do and see within the city, and the loggia gave us the best facility possible for chilling out. Grazie mille! Joanne, David, James and Simon Raywood, Gloucestershire. Excellent property in outstanding location. Owner very friendly and helpful. Jim Arrowsmith, Coventry. It was perfect for our party of five ... 2 baths/3 bedrooms/great balcony/well equipped kitchen! The apartment was very clean and spacious. The location was superb!!! The owner was charming and very helpful ... even stocking the fridge with cold bottled water and as a special treat, a bottle of wine from their own vineyard! I definitely would recommend this apartment to our friends ... In fact, I already have! I also want to thank Summer’s Leases for helping us make this such a special vacation. You responded so quickly to all of my inquiries and thanks especially for making the extra effort to contact us when the apartment became available ... We look forward to our next European vacation and hope you will have an apartment that “fits” us so well next time. Mary Fowler, Ohio. |
