A large and lovely Tuscan farmhouse dating from the 1600s. It's the ideal place to share between friends and families to cut costs this summer - but without cutting standards!

San Bartolomeo is just over an hour and a half's drive from Rome's airports, or barely an hour if you can fly Ryanair into Perugia airport. You'd be staying not quite 4 km from the busy little Tuscan town of Sarteano (the excellent trattoria Da Gagliano is a must). Sarteano is brilliantly placed for exploring both Tuscany and Umbria and even heading into Lazio if you can manage to drag yourself from the peace and comfort of San Bartolomeo. With cooking classes and painting sessions on offer, not to mention candle-lit Tuscan dinners served at your very own table, you may find sightseeing trips taking a bit of a back seat this year ...?

San Bartolomeo is utterly private, but by no means isolated. Five minutes in the car and you are down in the bustle of Sarteano - or look at it the other way round: five minutes in the car and you are back in your haven of tranquility. The church of San Bartolomeo is a pleasant stroll through the woodland near the house. It is said that Saint Francis of Assisi was tempted by the devil while meditating in a grotto in these very woods. To celebrate his victory over the Great Tempter, his followers constructed a convent and later the church. In fact, the Etruscans used those grottoes over a thousand years before Saint Francis came to pray and one wonders if the convent may be yet another example of Christianity overlaying the hallowed ground of a much earlier religion. Whatever the truth, the house is in a magically sylvan location! As our photos show, San Bartolomeo looks down on wonderful wide views of the Val d’Orcia, across the Val di Chiana, with Lake Trasimeno sparkling in full view too.

A picturesque barn provides a shady place for lunch with its stone table and nearby barbecue. The outdoor "summer kitchen" is a real bonus for those who prefer to live the outdoor life. The pool is surrounded by fields and then woods - unspoilt Tuscany at its very best!

The ground floor of this handsome farmhouse (once byres and stabling), now has a huge sitting room with a vast open fireplace, satellite TV and doors out to the grounds. There’s also a useful laundry room and a half bathroom on this floor, together with a charming double bedroom with en suite bathroom and a little sitting area all to itself. The style and standard of the house will please you greatly. Rustic and characterful in parts, spanking new where it counts(like the bathrooms), and altogether comfortable. The ancient, brick-built bread oven remains in the hall by the front door.

Upstairs, you’ll find another pleasant sitting room with an old fireplace and a nicely equipped, modern kitchen with dishwasher, fridge-freezer and an oven with 5 gas hobs. The spacious dining area has a huge oak dining table. The bedrooms are all very pretty as you can see from the photos, while the bathrooms are exceptionally well finished.

San Bartolomeo is perfect for sharing and its wonderfully placed for hopping into Umbria, popping down to Rome or exploring temptatious Tuscany. It's also a serious bargain - so snap it up while you may and spoil yourselves under the Tuscan sun this summer!

In June of 2010 we took our four Children and spouses to Italy in celebration of our 50th wedding anniversary. I think it was the most wonderful week any of us have ever experienced.

The villa was beautiful historic Italy with modern comforts. The view was breath-taking. The swimming pool was clean and refreshing. There were colorful flowers all around. It was easy to fly into Rome and drive 2 hours to San Bartolomeo.

The Villa is in the perfect location for many easy day trips. We toured Sarteano, Montepulciano, Pienza, Chianciano, Chiusi, Orvieto, Siena and Florence. The owners Fiorenza and Marco seemed like friends. They were readily available and gave us helpful information.

What wonderful memories we all have of Tuscany and San Bartolomeo.

San Bartolomeo was an absolute joy. Everyone loved the beautifully restored farmhouse, exquisite views (breathtaking sunrises) and serenity of the property. Marco and Fiorenza?s warmth and hospitality and fabulous meals were a special treat.

From the quiet early morning walks to the late night star gazing, we had a truly memorable time. We enjoyed cooking and eating together and visiting with wine around a fire every evening while talking about our wonderful adventures in Tuscany and Umbria.

We found San Bartolomeo far exceeded our expectations - the photos on the web site really do not do it justice.

It was a very comfortable place to be, so much so that it was often difficult to drag ourselves away!

Jane Sagar, Surrey.

We got along very well. St Bartolomeo is a beautiful house, the views are really unbelievable and Marco has restored the farmhouse in a very sensitive way: the furniture is beautiful, each room is painted in a different colour and the bathrooms correspond to that colour. The location of the house high above Lago Trasimeno is great and the travelling party is indeed as private as it can be.

Barbara Martin, Nuernberg.

House was as described in brochure - truly comfortable for a large group. Views outstanding, position great and pool sublime. Marco very helpful even when we got stuck on road and gas canister ran out for cooker!

Even saw wild deer run by as we played volleyball in the pool.

The Gordons, Leicestershire.

We very much enjoyed our holiday. San Bartolomeo provided just the right environment for our celebration. Our friends and family felt that they also had a memorable stay. Marco and Fiorenza did everything we asked of them to iron out any problems. They are a lovely couple and so helpful.

David and Anita Molyneux, Cheshire.

Thank you for a marvelous holiday in San Bartolomeo. We arrived around 5pm on the Saturday and all was fine (the drive up the unmade road was quite an experience but something you get used to and the view as we rounded the last bend was something out of this world!).

Marco and Fiorenza arrived and gave us a tour of the villa and made us feel really at home. We had a minor problem but was sorted immediately by Marco. The views and facilities were all that was stated by Summer’s Leases. We took advantage of Elena to cook us a meal twice and it was fabulous, very Tuscan and was more of a feast than a meal, I would recommend it to any future arrival.

Marco and Fiorenza made us all feel very welcome and we felt that we had known them for many years, they brought their two sons which our grandson really appreciated as it gave him someone to play football with; unfortunately they supported different teams!!! but this was not a problem. It is quite difficult to get the whole family together, (one son lives in the far east) but we did and they also thoroughly enjoyed the villa. This started two years ago in Singapore and I must confess did not think that we could arrange it, but we did and cannot wait to do it again. The region is so unspoilt and very very Italian that you feel you must return. Please convey our thanks to Marco and Fiorenza for everything. Once again thank you and regards.

Alec and Brenda Tanner, Hampshire.
