Podere La Rota is a delightful cottage set among peaceful olive groves, barely a ten minute stroll from the village of Moncioni, which is slap in the centre of Tuscany’s “golden triangle” formed by Florence, Siena and Arezzo. At La Rota, you are comfortably within an hour’s drive of all three of the tempting must-see points of the triangle and you are also on the doorstep of the fine red wines of Chianti. If you prefer to let the train take the sightseeing strain, it’s just ten minutes drive down to the busy town of Montevarchi, where you can park and hop on a train down to Rome or up to Florence. Montevarchi also boasts an excellent Thursday morning market, where you’ll find fresh fruit and veg plus clothing and household bargains galore and there’s an antiques market on the last Sunday of every month too.
For fashion enthusiasts, just 20 minutes drive will get you to Levane, where the Prada outlet is discreetly tucked away. The area abounds in outlets selling fabulous shoes, glassware and cashmere to name but few. And the outlets for Armani, Fendi, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana are all in a 40-minute drive from this beautifully furnished cottage (you’ll find full details of the locations of the high fashion outlets in all Summer’s Leases House Books).
The walled village of Moncioni is tiny, but you’ll nevertheless find a bar, a well stocked “sell-everything” shop and an elegant restaurant. If you want to drive into Chianti to dine at the ancient and atmospheric Osteria di Starda, there’s a secret back route which is a wonderfully scenic ten-minute drive from your cottage. Serious walkers couldn’t pick a better base than Podere La Rota with maps in the house showing the many local footpaths, or you might prefer to settle for a gentle saunter in the sylvan surroundings of La Rota’s 30 acres of woods and olive groves.
Attention has been paid to every detail of this pretty cottage: from the comfortable furnishings in authentic Tuscan style to the superbly well equipped kitchen and newly updated bathroom. The owners have tried to think of everything by providing useful things like a sewing kit, sun bathing towels, a range of CDs and DVDs, a bookcase with maps, books and guides and a lavish welcome snack (assorted cold meats, mozzarella and vegetable salads, nibbles, chocolates and a complementary bottle of spumante) and breakfast pack (croissants, bread, butter and jam, tea, coffee, fresh milk and fruit juice) to ensure you start your holiday in style.
Your own private terrace is equipped with sun loungers, huge shady umbrella and a table for candle-lit dining under the Tuscan stars. Podere La Rota’s two cats will no doubt drop by to check up on what you are doing, unlike the owners who are discretion itself - they’re there and a mine of local information if you need them, otherwise you will be left to enjoy your gloriously peaceful surroundings in perfect privacy.
If you want something special in Tuscany, you’ll be delighted with La Rota!Werner Stein, S Africa, 2018The reviews will say it all. Fabulous hosts, super cottage, great position!John and Julie, 2018What a fantastic location! Bob and Allison have certainly created a wonderful retreat from it all and have indeed thought of everything to make staying at Podere La Rota a sheer delight. Arriving to find cool beers and wine in the fridge was just what was required after a hot drive from Firenza and Allison’s beautiful platters kept us going for two days with tasty local Tuscan cuisine. The sounds of wild boar and deer just added to the wonderful sunsets over breath taking scenery as we sat on the balcony each evening.
Podere La Rota is ideally situated in the hills above Montevarchi and makes travelling by train or car to Firenza, Siena, Arezzo and further afield a simple journey. The Botega in Moncini is delightful and drinking an early morning or evening coffee on the veranda was a simple delight.
This was our third visit to Italy with Summer Leases and it certainly won’t be the last – plans are already forming for next year.John and Sarah, 2017Bob and Ally could not have been more welcoming or thoughtful as hosts: the superb 'welcome pack' of delicious food in the fridge, a tastefully decorated house that offered peace, comfort and spectacular views over an olive grove and a wooded valley, a file of useful information and their attentive suggestions whenever we asked, combined to give us a wonderful holiday.
Podere La Rota is an ideal base for exploring Tuscany, with Florence, Siena, Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and the Chianti vineyards all within reach but, in truth, what remains clearest in the memory is the ease and beauty of dining on the terrace in the warmth of the evening, glass in hand. This place is a gem and I would recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat.Shaun R, Kansas, 2017We couldn't have asked for more! From the large terrace with its incredible view to the beautifully decorated interior, this cottage was exactly what we'd hoped for. The living spaces were comfortable and cozy, the kitchen well-equipped, and extras such as a washing machine, dishwasher, and internet were also helpful.
We were greeted with a welcome pack of food and drinks that was very generous delicious, and appreciated. The location offered quiet countryside tranquility, but also convenience to small towns, the train, and day trip destinations. After our initial greetings and helpful information, Bob and Ally were always available yet gave us complete privacy unless we sought them out.
We highly recommend this property, and would love to stay here again on our next trip to Tuscany.Casanne Grahame, Australia, 2017What an amazing place to stay. Bob & Ally the owners who also live on the property were very welcoming & could not do enough to make our stay in Podere La Rota most memorable.
The 7 nights we spent here were the highlight of our one month adventures in Italy. From the amazing platters that were left in the fridge on arrival to the gorgeous view from the veranda where we spent most afternoons it was just wonderful. Our only disappointment was the fact that we traveled a little too early in April with a couple of the Osteria's close to Podere La Rota not opening until after Easter. We will have to come back to try them!!!Christiane + Peter Gaehtgens, Deutschland, 2016Zum dritten Mal fällt uns die Abfahrt schwer - es war von Anfang bis zum Ende wunderbar.
Stephen Rosenfeld, USA, 2016This is truly the best weekly rental we've had in decades of similar trips. I'm not sure the pictures do justice to the privacy and peace waiting for you here. The hosts are perfectionists, and we the renters are the beneficiaries. So here are some words that come to mind: comfort, cleanliness, light, helpful advice, accessibility to Tuscany's best. We feel fortunate to have been at La Rota.Robert and Glenda, Scotland, 2016Just wanted to say thank you for helping us have a wonderful holiday. The cottage was so much more than we expected . It really was a little piece of heaven. Never have I been on holiday with such kind and thoughtful hosts. You have thought of everything to make the perfect holiday.Vicki P & Andy G, Switzerland, 2015We had looked forward to this trip since finding this gem of a place on the internet. Looking at the images it was perfect for what we wanted: a quiet "get-away-from-it-all" place with little or no distractions! We couldn't have asked for more!
The driving directions (from Switzerland) were spot on, and arriving slightly later than anticipated was of no concern for the owners. We were made to feel immediately welcome and were able to relax (collapse?) in tranquil peace and quiet!
Our week was spent eating, drinking, sitting in the sun and trying not to attract too many bitey beasties. In a place like this, however, it is difficult to care about such little annoyances! Even the (one) thunderstorm was an amazing spectacle! The immediate surrounding area is beautiful, and there's Sienna and Florence within easy driving distance.
As for the accommodation, again we could not have asked for much more. It was a fabulous size for the two of us, and we definitely took advantage of having the place to ourselves: tidying up and packing the day before we (reluctantly) left was a bit of a chore and took longer due to our laziness throughout the week!!! All living areas, including the bedroom and the bathroom, were very well maintained, equipped and furnished. The well stocked kitchen was again simply ideal for our needs.
All in all, this was a spectacular find and well worth the wait and the lengthy drive. Would we return to the area? Sure! Would we return to the same accommodation (this one)? Why not? When you find somewhere this good, why would you look anywhere else?Leon Steenkamp, UK, 2015I had a lovely stay at Podere la Rota. The cottage was excellent, and in my view certainly much better value for money than what one would typically get in the UK. It is private, fully kitted and large, considering it caters for two. If a quiet Tuscan holiday, away from the tourist masses, is what you are after, this is it! The cottage is on a small olive farm high up in the Tuscan hills, in the wine producing region of Chianti. Still, it is easy to make daytrips to Siena, Florence, and the Tuscan hilltop towns. The hosts are great and very friendly and know the area very well, including some good restaurants in the vicinity. The welcome hamper in the fridge on arrival is delicious, and certainly gets one off to a good start!
I would definitely highly recommend Podere la Rota to anyone.Matthew Carpanini, Crawley, 2015We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Podere La Rota.
The directions were easy to follow (head for the hilltop village of Moncioni and from there it's very simple).
Once we arrived, we were met by the owners who provided a welcome pack which filled the fridge sufficiently so that we didn't need to go shopping for a day or two (and good local wine was also available for a very reasonable price).
Both Bob and Ally were wonderful hosts, contributing greatly to a lovely holiday. They set you up on day one and then leave you to your own devices.
The property was well equipped with everything we needed and more. View from the terrace was beautiful.
The location is perfect for a trip to rural Tuscany. Plenty of walks through local woodland, olive trees and vineyards. The landscape is stunning and teems with wildlife (deer, boar, butterflies and so much more).Robert Blesse, Nevada (5 star clients)My wife Vicki and I have made six visits to Podere La Rota and without question, it is the most wonderful place we’ve ever stayed in Italy. The cottage is near the charming little village of Moncioni, nestled in the hills of Chianti. It’s a lovely property with kitchen, dining, and living room downstairs, large bedroom and bath on the upper floor. Vicki always says that the huge bathroom is the best in Italy — a large window over the tub looks out at the beautiful Chianti mountains. All the rooms are spacious and well appointed with comfortable furniture and beautiful art. We do a great deal of cooking and the kitchen is perfect for two people with an excellent gas stove, refrigerator, and plenty of pots, pans, cooking utensils, and a washing machine. There’s also a wine rack in the kitchen and guests can purchase Podere La Rota’s special bottling of organic Chianti at a bargain price to enjoy during their stay. Perhaps the most outstanding feature of the cottage is the large terrace, which overlooks the olive orchard below and has a mesmerizing view of wooded hills and distant villages. At one end of the terrace a large chestnut tree shades a table and chairs, where we eat most of our meals. There are also lounges, wicker chairs, and a smaller table that is perfect for cocktails or a glass of Chianti. Aside from frequent naps and time on the Internet (the cottage has wireless Internet), the kitchen and the terrace are where we spend most of our time, cooking with local ingredients, reading, writing, painting, and sketching. It is the quintessential place to relax.Bob and Ally, who own Podere La Rota and live adjacent to the cottage, are model hosts. Every detail is taken care of, from the welcome platter of delicious meats, cheeses, and local tomatoes, to advice on local restaurants, shops, and destinations nearby. Originally from England, they have lived in Italy for more than twenty-five years and their business of renting houses and villas throughout Tuscany and Umbria has given them an intimate knowledge of the region. There are few questions they can’t answer and they go out of their way to be both helpful and unobtrusive.Podere La Rota serves as an excellent base for exploring the Chianti region and beyond. The major wine towns of the region are all within an hour’s drive, offering wine tasting, excellent restaurants, and beautiful views. Siena can be reached in less than an hour by car and Florence is just a thirty-minute train ride from Montevarchi, fifteen minutes away. Further afield are many must-see Tuscan and Umbrian hill towns - Cortona, Orvieto, Perugia, and Arezzo - all filled with stunning art and beautiful architecture. The cottage is an easy drive or train ride from Rome. For most of our visits we have spent a few days in the Eternal City then picked up our rental car at the main train station and made the three-hour drive to Moncioni, stopping for lunch at one of the many hill towns that dot the landscape adjacent to the A1 expressway. Last year, however, we flew directly into Florence where we spent the night before picking up our rental car. Once we reach Montevarchi, we usually stop at the Ipercoop for provisions before driving up the mountain to the cottage. It’s a huge store by Italian standards, filled with food, wine, and household items. As always, upon reaching the top of the drive leading down to the cottage, we smile and realize we’ve returned home to a small piece of heaven.Kim and Joe Duffy, Seattle, WAWe were blown away by Podere La Rota! The villa is beautiful, spacious, and perfectly situated to either hang out and enjoy the scenery or explore central Tuscany.
We stayed here during the second week of our honeymoon and it was truly a highlight of our trip to Italy. The hustle-and-bustle of the city was nowhere to be found in the serene escape of Moncioni, and the simplicity was overwhelmingly relaxing. We were greeted by the owners' dog Livia as soon as we arrived and then by our gracious and entertaining host, who gave us very useful information for the week ahead (such as where to shop for good local food).
We spent the week relaxing, reading books on the porch with its amazing view, glass of wine typically in hand; cooking as much as we could, thanks to the well-stocked kitchen, and local farmer's market with the freshest and most amazing ingredients that will satisfy even the most demanding foodies; watching the occasional movie (they have a great selection in the villa); and walking around, and touring the surrounding area.
As for what we did in the surrounding area -- we're really into food and wine so that dominated our agenda. :) Some highlights included wine tasting at Castello di Meleto, tasting more wines than we should at Le Cantine di Greve in Chianti (there are ~1000 wines available for tasting), visiting the farmer's market, buying and drinking tremendous amounts of local wine, grappa, and limoncello, and eating at great restaurants like Osteria Le Panzanella and Mac Dario, both featuring local Chianti dishes and ingredients. Siena and other Chianti destinations are just an hour or two drive away, so we went on a couple 1/2-day trips also. Not too much though, as the real treat at Podere La Rota is relaxing "at home".
Livia was a true delight. Since we're dog-deprived at home, we loved spending time with her and taking her on walks. We're still enjoying the olive oil that the owners made with the olives they grow on site.
We plan to come back as soon as we can! Thanks for an amazing time!!Helena & Greg, KildareWe had a wonderful holiday in this beautiful haven hidden away in the hills of Tuscany. The breathtaking views coupled with the very well equipped and sensitively decorated house made this a memorable holiday. We arrived at Podere La Rota to a warm welcome from Livia and a fridge filled with delicious food. An equally warm welcome from the owners and we were convinced that this was going to be a relaxing and truly enjoyable holiday.
It was difficult to tear ourselves away from Podere La Rota but we did manage trips to Siena, Arezzo, Cortona and some local villages. We arrived home to glorious sunsets which we enjoyed while sipping the excellent Podere La Rota wine and food enhanced by the delicious organic olive oil produced from the olives groves on the estate.
Podere La Rota felt like home as we were invited to help ourselves to cherries from the cherry tree in front of the house. The owners' courtesy and discretion allowed us to unwind and immerse ourselves in the delights of Tuscany.Andrea & Hans, AmsterdamWe stayed at Podere la Rota in August 2011 and I can honestly say it was one of the best vacations we've ever had. The house, the surroundings, the weather, everything was just perfect. From the moment we arrived it was obvious that nothing was lacking. The house is cosy yet luxurious, everything you need - and more! - is there: dishwasher, washing machine, satellite t.v., stereo, bathtub, books, dvd's, kitchen utensils, clean towels, comfy bed. Come to think of it, the house is far better equipped than our own.
And then there's the 'welcome pack'. Never before have we had such delicious plates filled with all kinds of 'Italian tapas' waiting for us in a holiday cottage! Not to mention the spumante, the croissants and the sunday cakes... we felt totally spoiled. To make it even more perfect there's the fabulous view from the terrace. We spent many hours there, drinking the good (organic) wine from the cantinetta in the kitchen, gazing over the olive grove and watching the amazing sunsets. It was hard to get up and actually do something since staying at La Rota was way too tempting. But occasionally we managed to tear ourselves away from paradise to walk in the region with Livia, the dog. Walking to nearby Montegonzi was lovely. The surroundings of Radda and Montalcino are also great for walking. (but bring a detailed map!)
The owners got us tickets for the annual 'Moncioni sotto le stelle' festival. We wouldn't have known about this event if it weren't for them and we were lucky to taste a great selection of regional wines, cheese, cakes, pasta's and other regional dishes at this busy village fiesta. Very few (other) tourists there and a great atmosphere, we had a wonderful time.
Wildlife watchers won't be disappointed either: at night wild boar might come to feed in the olive grove. You'll know when they've arrived since Livia will tell you! We also saw many deer, birds and a marten during our walks.
I would recommend Podere la Rota to anyone that wants to visit Tuscany (Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Pienza, Arezzo, Montalcino are all within an easy day-trip driving distance) and who likes nature, good food, a comfortable, cosy house and friendly, hospitable hosts.Angie Fawkes, Edinburgh (5 star clients)You always take a chance coming back to somewhere you have been before, especially when we loved our first visit to Podere La Rota so much. However, our second stay here was even better than before and we can't wait to come back again!
Unlike last time, we spent almost the entire week on the terrace, enjoying the view and the wine!
Whether you want to do the same or to tour the surrounding countryside, or take a day trip to Florence or even Rome, Podere La Rota is the perfect destination for a Tuscan holiday and we cant recommend it highly enough.
Grazie de tutto!
Love, Angie and Ryan.Tom & Julie Pinckheard, BathWhen Bob showed us around the beautifully equipped, charming, comfortable little house we immediately felt at home. We ate on the veranda from the very lavish welcome dishes and even a bottle of sparkling white wine they had left for us. Livia the white Maremma sheep dog also joined us. It was the start of a perfect week. Bob and Ally couldn’t have been kinder and more welcoming. The kitchen lacked for nothing and we ate in almost every evening. This was quite a change for us as we normally love eating out on holiday but the view was so lovely that we didn’t think we could find a better restaurant. Livia couldn’t have been a nicer companion and every morning she joined Tom on a walk in the valley. Being greeted by her made us feel we were coming home.
I couldn’t find anything negative to say about Podere La Rota, it was magical from beginning to end and just writing about it has made me wish I was back there right now. Thank you Summer’s Leases, we hope to enjoy many more holidays with you.Crispin Davies, Kent (5 star clients)This is the 7th Summer’s Leases house that we have stayed in and they get better and better! This was only the second week of letting of this new house but everything was in place including a superb welcome pack and the odd bottle or two of cold white wine in the fridge - just the welcome for weary travellers! The electric fans were a great help (well, it had been 40°C in the shade!) when we finally dragged ourselves off the terrace to go inside having admired the superb views for several hours over a leisurely meal.
Jerry and Maria Gumeniuk, Bradford (5 star clients)Our third consecutive year at La Rota emphasises the esteem in which we hold this hidden gem. Roll-on 2010!
Andrew Young and Clare Turner, BillericayWe found Podere La Rota to be a home from home of the highest quality (in fact we’d swap our home for the cottage in a flash). First impressions really do last and from the moment we stepped on to the patio we fell for the location in a big way...
I had planned to ask Clare to marry me whilst in Rome or maybe Florence, but one night as we sat on the patio watching an amazing sun set with a stunning view across the valley, I knew that no more romantic setting could be found anywhere in Italy. The big question was popped and thankfully (with no little help from the surroundings) Clare said yes. We found the cottage to be an ideal base for traveling around this beautiful part of the country or as a haven to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We can’t wait to go back.
